Ronnie Mund blames track, race planners in Dan Wheldon crash death (photos)

Howard Stern Show auto aficionado Ronnie Mund says IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon, who died in a fiery crash at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday, never should have been driving on such a narrow track.

Mund, host of the short-lived Sirius XM spinoff 'The Auto Show,' told Howard Stern Show listeners that he was watching the Izod IndyCar Series race live when the crash happened.

"I was actually watching the race. The first couple of laps, a couple guys touched tires because when they went to pass each other the air would suck them in, and they’re too close. The track is not wide enough for those cars.”

Mund said that the track is fine for NASCAR races, but said whomever decided to throw IndyCars into the venue was asking for trouble.

"NASCAR races there, but their cars do 170-180 [MPH] on that track...Indy Cars, they do like 220-230—open car, faster motors—the whole deal. That track is a very narrow track and they try to run three wide, two wide. And when they try to pass each other on that track at that kind of speed, the air, as they’re going by, pulls them closer to the other cars."

Mund also blamed the Speedway's metal "catch fence" which he stated "ripped him apart like a can opener."

Howard Stern irreverantly stated that he assumed that fans watching were hoping to see a wreck, but Mund replied:

"Not like that, man."

Dan Wheldon was a 33-year-old IndyCar driver from England. He left behind a wife and two infant sons.
