Ronda Rousey stops Sara McMann in first round at UFC 170

Last night at UFC 170: Rousey vs McMann, the reigning UFC woman's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey faced what some believed could be the biggest test of her career in fellow Olympic medalist Sara McMann. Rousey passed the test with no issue.

It was believed that Sara McMann, who won a silver medal in wrestling at the 2004 Olympics, would bring a level of wrestling talent that Rousey had not seen in her short career. McMann came into the fight with an undefeated record of 7-0 as well as an impressive first round TKO victory over Sheila Gaff in her UFC debut.

Rousey, if you do not already know, has become one of the UFC's biggest stars and stepped into the cage with an eight fight win streak. All eight of Rousey's wins came by way of armbar.

At the start of the fight both women met in the center of the cage with Rousey getting the better of their striking exchanges. McMann was able to avoid being thrown early by keeping her base low while in the clinch against the cage. Rousey was able to control the clinch and land some strong knees to the body.

It was a sharp knee to the liver of McMann that sent her down to the mat. Rousey moved in to land a few shots before the ref stepped in and stopped the fight. It appeared that the finish may have came a little early but there was no immediate protest from the challenger.

The end officially came just 66 seconds into the first round.

“I thought it was a good fight. I got hit in the liver, and no matter how hard you train, you can’t get your liver stronger,” Sara McMann told Joe Rogan. “I hope to get a rematch and come back here and put on a better fight. I was trying to get back up, but it’s my own fault. I should’ve gotten back to my feet quicker.”

In the post-event press conference, UFC president Dana White addressed the possibility of the fight being stopped early.

“Listen, guys,” White said. “I’ve been in this business a long time. I’ve seen that happen to Oscar de la Hoya and many other great fighters. You get hit to the body like that, and regular people who have never been hit to the body have no [expletive] clue what that feels like. Believe me when I tell you that."

"Could Herb have let her take some shots to the face?" White continued. "Definitely. But when the fight happened and I saw it, I said, ‘Oh man.’ And then I watched the replay. When I watched the replay, I thought it was a good stoppage.”

It was disappointing as a fan that we did not get to see more, but as Rousey continues to improve it looks like early finishes will continue. Rousey moves to 9-0 overall and will wait to see who emerges as her next challenger for the UFC woman's bantamweight title. During her off time she will work on her roles in the upcoming action movie "Expendables 3" and the "Entourage" movie.

UFC 170: Rousey vs McMann aired live on pay per view from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
