Metaphorically speaking, while some journalists in the mainstream media are busy trying to get Ron Paul to sleep in a bed someone else made for him twenty years ago in his basement, he and a growing number of his supporters are lighting the fires of liberty one heart at a time across the nation.
I am speaking about the regurgitation of newsletters written over two decades ago by an unknown ghost writer who took some racially charged artistic license while writing for a Ron Paul newsletter. The ironic part of this story is that the true author of these articles has likely not chimed in to take responsibility for these writings because he is, if the rumors are true, a ghost himself. If this is true then it means that Ron Paul won't sell out a friend for political expedience.
Regardless of who the true author is, with all the might that can be mustered some members of the media have latched onto some "bad things" (Ron Paul's description) written in Ron Paul's old newsletters and hold them as the clearest reason for rejecting him as a candidate.
Perhaps the worst of anyone's ideas could be held valiantly against them in a court of public opinion decades down the road. But there are several issues with that logic.
He did not write them and he has disavowed them. He has fought against legislation and programs that negatively affect minorities. Most importantly, he is not and was never a leader of a racist organization that decided one day to try to become president and enact racist legislation to further inflict controls over minorities.
This is a candidate that has fought for "liberty for all" since placing his hand on the bible and swearing to uphold the Constitution. And he has. Since these writings do not align with any of Ron Paul's or any of his political positions the media are asking, "Who wrote them?" and "Why won't Ron Paul take time out in the days prior to the first caucus and investigate this already dead horse . . . again?".
Quite honestly I agree that those divisive quotes from the newsletter are very insulting, undoubtedly. However our united free future is not just in danger of being insulted. It is in danger of being destroyed. I suggest taking a pause from that pointless pursuit and remembering that the greatest civil rights advocates did not always suggest boycotting those places that were segregated, but instead occupying them.
Occupy Ron Paul's Campaign!
Ron Paul has garnered a lot of support from people frustrated by the failings of the two party system. These are not just staunch independents; these are people of both Democratic and Republican persuasion that had lost faith in a two party system that is growing beyond all controls.
If adherence to the Constitution is of any value to you then Ron Paul is an ideal candidate for president. I fear we may never have a perfect candidate for any political office, but please don't let any talking head, including me, coerce you into voting for any candidate whose values don't reflect your own.
What Ron Paul is calling for in his campaign, in his foreign policy, in his approach to government is NOT a call to arms. It is the exact opposite. He is asking for a call to peace. A call to liberty. I hope that is what you find in Ron Paul's full body of work as an author and as a politician.
