Yesterday was ‘one for the ages’ in Denver amateur boxing, as the inaugural Greg Cox-Ron Lyle Memorial Boxing Show was a resounding success, as well as Denver having two 2012 National Silver Gloves Champions crowned.
The Red Shield/Salvation Army Cox-Lyle Boxing program and facility located at 2915 High St. in Denver, had for the ten previous years honored the memory of the late Greg Cox (son of Mr. Bob Cox) who was a great friend, admirer and supporter of Denver former heavyweight contender Ron Lyle.
With the recent (November 2011) passing of Lyle, Bob Cox felt it fitting to honor Lyle in the same manner as he’d done his son and that decision was properly met with a packed house in attendance, bad weather dampening the spirits of none.
A few celebrities in attendance honoring both Lyle and Cox were Jill Lyle (wife of the late Ron Lyle), Susan Cox-Carlin (daughter of Bob Cox and sister of the late Greg Cox), former WBC light welterweight champion ‘Lightning’ Lonnie Smith, and heavyweight contender DaVarryl Williamson, Ringside National Masters Champion Robert Baca, and Delgado Boxing head man Henry Delgado, just to name a few.
The Cox-Lyle Boxing program, now under the guidance of former professional standout Tito Tovar and Salvation Army Captain Ron McKinney, remains one of Denver’s top amateur programs and Ron Lyle would have been proud of yesterday’s turnout.
The 2012 National Silver Gloves Tournament held in Independence, Missouri, had Denver Police Brotherhood star Andrew Strode capture the 90 lbs. (14-15 years-old) title as well as Backyard Brawlers standout Elmer Monarrez winning the 70 lbs. (10-11 years-old) crown.
For Andrew Strode, winning National title’s has become ‘a given’, as this makes his 5th time being named a National Champion with Elmer Monarrez learning to play ‘follow the leader’ this being his 2nd National Silver Gloves title.
Sources have confirmed Andrew Strode will soon be named the Denver Post 2011 Amateur Athlete of the Year, a well-deserved honor that has rarely (if ever) been bestowed upon a boxer.
Denver amateur boxing is very much alive and well, with both local and national competition showcasing our committed stars who continue needing your support.
Ron Lyle would have been (and probably is) proud of the happenings in Denver amateur boxing yesterday.
