Former Governor of Massachusetts Mitt Romney now leads in the latest Florida polls by double digits after two strong debate performances this past week. Heading into Florida after the South Carolina primary and before the two Florida debates, Newt Gingrich was leading Romney by 9 points in Florida.
The latest polling from Rasmussen shows Romney with a 16 point advantage over former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. The new poll which was conducted Saturday, January 28, 2012, polled 750 likely voters in Florida and has a margin of error of +/- 4 percentage points.
The question asked and the results of the Rasmussen poll January 28, 2012:
“If the 2012 Republican Primary for president were held today, would you vote for Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum or Ron Paul?”
- Mitt Romney 44 percent
- Newt Gingrich 28 percent
- Rick Santorum 12 percent
- Ron Paul 10 percent
- Undecided 6 percent
The previous poll numbers by Rasmussen taken the day after Newt Gingrich won the South Carolina primary showed Newt Gingrich up by 9 points over Mitt Romney. This poll, which was conducted Sunday January 22, 2012, also polled 750 likely voters in Florida and has a margin of error of +/- 4 percentage points.
The question asked and the results of the Rasmussen poll January 22, 2012:
“If the 2012 Republican Primary for president were held today, would you vote for Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum or Ron Paul?”
- Newt Gingrich 41 percent
- Mitt Romney 32 percent
- Rick Santorum 11 percent
- Ron Paul 8 percent
- Undecided 8 percent
Real Clear Politics (RCP) which applies all the polls taken in the past week then averages out the numbers, shows Mitt Romney leading with 41 percent over Newt Gingrich with 29.7 percent. Rick Santorum is third with 13.5 percent and Ron Paul with 9.8 percent.
This Tuesday, January 31, 2012, Florida will hold its primary and if the numbers hold Mitt Romney will win. The next stop for the Republican candidates after Florida is Nevada where republicans will caucus on February 4, 2012.
