Romney, Georgetown steel mill are topics on Sunday's 'Inside Politics' show

To most South Carolinians, Mitt Romney’s already come and gone, just has the recent state Republican presidential primary in which he placed a distant second.

But there are a few thousand here who’ll never forget him, and who don’t want anyone else in the Palmetto State to, either.

Like James Sanderson, for instance, who’ll be on this weekend’s “Inside Politics” on WOIC 1230 AM.

President of the United Steelworkers Local Union 7898, Sanderson will share personal insight and reflection of the effects Romney’s Bain Capital had on local workers and the state economy after it acquired Georgetown’s steel mill.

Hosted by David Calef, the “Inside Politics” show starts at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29, and can also be heard live online (click here and use the “listen live” link on that page.)

Bain purchased GS Industries, the parent company of the Georgetown mill, in 1993 for $24.5 million. By 2000, Romney’s investment firm made $58.4 million on the deal.

But no one else made any money on the deal but Romney and his partners, it seems. Shortly after the purchase, Bain Capital twice cut employee benefits. In early 2001, GS Industries filed bankruptcy, carrying $553.9 million in debt to creditors – and leaving 1,750 employees out of work.

Bain also acquired and then shut down a photo album manufacturer in Gaffney, SC.

Sanderson was a guest on MSNBC’s “The Ed Show” last week, discussing Romney and the steel mill before the January 21 primary.
