Romeoville shooting: 2 females shot en route to school, 4 people in questioning

A Romeoville shooting occurred this week, leaving 2 females — a mother and her daughter — shot en route to school. At this time, a total of 4 people considered individuals “of interest” are being questioned by Romeoville city police over the shocking crime. CBS News reports this Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, that several nearby schools were placed on a soft lockdown immediately following the shooting, though the lockdown has since been lifted.

The Romeoville shooting is confirmed to have happened this Thursday morning while a mother and her teenage daughter were on the way to the minor's school. Police Chief Mark Turvey revealed that local investigators to the Chicago city suburb are still working to ascertain a possible motive in the double shooting. Although the victims’ identities have not been released, they are known to be a 33-year-old woman and her daughter, a 15-year-old girl.

The 2 females were said to be shot in Romeoville early this morning, shortly after 7 a.m. while preparing to go to school and entering their SUV. The victims’ home is located near the 300 block of Emery Avenue.

In addition to the 4 persons of interest currently being questioned by police officials, the law enforcement chief added that a single male is believed to have come near the car and shot the 15-year-old daughter first before opening fire on the mother.

“A male subject approached the car and shot the daughter, and then shot the mother,” the chief said. “The gunmen specifically targeted these women.”

Little information is known on the potential suspects in custody at this time surrounding the Romeoville shooting, though they are all reported to be relatively young, ranging from their later teen years to early and mid 20s.

“We don’t know that any of these four are the offender, but we’re confident that the offender … either he’s no longer a threat, or he’s no longer in the area,” added Turvey in his statement.

The Romeoville police chief noted that shootings, on the whole, are an extremely uncommon occurrence in their city.

“If we get one a year, that’s a lot.”

The condition of both victims is not certain at this time. While the 15-year-old girl was rushed to Loyola University Medical Center, her mother was taken to the closer Bolingbrook Hospital.

A number of Romeoville area schools were placed on an emergency “soft lockdown” until it was deemed that the shooting threat had passed. A majority of schools requested that parents keep students safe at home until it was determined that the lockdown was over. The lockdown was lifted at roughly 9:30 a.m.

The investigation into this surprising and mysterious crime continues with police questioning the 4 “individuals of interest.”
