Award-winning actor Paul Giamatti has joined the cast of Carlo Carlei's Romeo and Juliet.
Adapted from Shakespeare's play by screenwriter Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey), Romeo and Juliet will star Oscar-nominee Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) and Douglas Booth (The Pillars of the Earth) as the star-crossed lovers who meet a tragic end. Giamatti now joins the cast as Friar Lawrence, the compassionate priest who plays a very important role in the main characters' romance.
Giamatti, who is perhaps best known for his work in 2004's Oscar-winning drama Sideways, recently completed filming David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis and the highly-anticipated musical Rock of Ages with Tom Cruise. After Romeo and Juliet, Giamatti will begin production on the television movie K Blows Top.
Romeo and Juliet also stars Ed Westwick (Gossip Girl), Leslie Manville (Vera Drake), and Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In). Production is currently underway in Italy.
