This article explores Rome, Italy, which placed 2nd on the top 25 world destination list. Its glory still shines through art, history, architecture, and beauty that entices tourist to visit the Eternal City known as Rome. Thought to have been founded in 753 BC, a recent article by the Telegraph indicates that Rome is almost two centuries older than its former founding date. After an ancient wall was discovered during excavations in the Forum, archeologists place its origins closer to 900 BC.

History lovers have flocked to Rome to see the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Roman Forum, the Trevi Fountain, and the Spanish Steps, eat Italian food, drink wine, and much, much more. Other popular sights you won't want to miss are the Catacombs along the Appian Way – Santa Domitilla is much-admired for its paintings and San Callisto is the largest of the catacombs. Plan to spend at least three days if you really want to see the main tourists sights of Rome.

Then, there’s Vatican City – the Sistine Chapel is a must see. The restored chapel ceilings reveal Michelangelo’s masterpiece that depicts stories from Genesis and took some four years to complete. Michelangelo returned over 20 years later to paint the Last Judgment, also in the Sistine Chapel. The Vatican Museums contain one of the greatest collections ever of art, sculptures, and papal objects. Upon entry to St. Peter’s Basilica, tourist can enjoy Bernini’s colonnade and The Pietà, another of Michelangelo’s famous sculptures (the statue of David is in Florence, Italy).

The work of renowned artists, Bernini, Raphael, Rubens, and Caravaggio can be viewed at the Galleria Borghese, while works of Mondrian, van Gogh, Cézanne, Degas, Klimt, Monet, Rodin and others can be viewed at the Galleria Nazionale d’Are Moderna. There are ten or more of these galleries and art museums in Rome. Therefore, a trip that includes several art galleries and museums, the Vatican Museums, and the popular tourists sights would require a week or more visit to Rome.

A wealth of information for your trip to Rome can be found on the Vatican Museum website and Rome's official tourism website. The tourism website also provides information about the Rome Pass which offers discounts or free entry to museums and transportation. Finally, don’t forget to try the gelato!
