Still trying to come up with the perfect Valentine's Day staycation? If you can't get up to New York City for a Broadway getaway, you can treat each other to the ballet or a show right here in Atlanta. Whether it's dance, drama, or comedy, Atlanta has everything you need for a fantastic New York-style date night, without the February snow!
The Atlanta Ballet is performing a new full-length classical ballet by choreographer Twyla Tharp, now through February 19, called "The Princess and the Goblin." Ms. Tharp is known for her more modern work with Baryshnikov (including "Push Comes to Shove" and the film "White Nights") and recently on Broadway (the Billy Joel dance-based musical "Movin' Out" and the Sinatra musical "Come Fly with Me"). New full-length narrative ballets are increasingly rare in today's dance world, and the world premiere of a work by Ms. Tharp in Atlanta is an event destined to impress your Valentine's date. The performances are at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, and tickets are available in person, by telephone, and online.
If ballet isn't your scene, there are plenty of theatrical events to choose from in Atlanta this week. The 2010 Tony Award winner for best play, "Red" is a biographical study of the artist Mark Rothko and his struggle to maintain his artistic standards under the pressure of a corporate commission. Performances run through March 11 and tickets are available online.
If you're in the mood for a comedy, the hit randy puppet musical "Avenue Q" is back in town this month and the show is offering a Valentine's special of two tickets, two drink vouchers, and special Valentine's treats, all for $100. This show is full of frisky, clever humor and is a guaranteed giggly good time.
Wherever your Valentine's plans take you, enjoy the night and each other, and take advantage of all that Atlanta has to offer.
