What's more romantic than a picnic surprise? You don't have to be an executive chef to pull off this maneuver. It's a just a few steps to make your S.O.'s heart melt.
Indoor or outdoor? The beach or a park may be an excellent spot. I've had an impromptu picnic outside of the library as a study break. If you're an outdoorsy couple, finding a pretty spot on a hiking trail is always a winner. If indoor, you may want to find an alcove at a museum, the zoo, or even just staying home. The home presentation may be a harder sell, but some music, a nice blanket spread on the ground, low lights and delicious food treats will do the work for you.
Tasty grinds? Maybe you want to do an all fruits, cheeses and veggies with an assortment of dips. Perhaps your S.O. is more of lau lau and rice kind of girl. Making it yourself is a special touch. Check out the video above for some idea. Not trying to be the next Rachel Ray? Don't worry, getting takeout from his favorite spot works well too. Just remember what your S.O. hates and is allergic to. If you can't remember, ask. You won't spoil the surprise. A terrible way to end a picnic is your date's face swelling because you accidentally packed a delicious smoothie filled with strawberries, which he's horribly allergic to and now you have to go to the nearest ER so he can get a shot, because he hasn't carried one around since the 6th grade because NO ONE gives him strawberries. Trust me. You don't want that.
What to pack? Utensils: forks, spoons, something to serve food with, chopsticks, or it may just be finger foods. Stuff to eat the food off of like plates or bowls. Napkins are nice, in case things get messy. Depending on the place, you can bring a blanket for sitting. Something to drink, and if need be glasses. If you're really trying to set a mood you can use candles, even the battery operated tea light candles can create a nice ambiance.
ProTip: If your picnic is a kind of beach scene indoors, have your S.O. lay on her tummy and rub her down with her favorite location. Warm it up in your hands first.
With these steps and some creativity, your picnic surprise will be make anywhere with your S.O. a romantic hideaway.
