Romance on the streets: Mardi Gras and Valentine’s day in New Orleans (Photos)

With Valentines Day upon us many minds are turning to romance yet in the streets of New Orleans romance has a long history.

In 2012 it was sweet to see Harry Connick Jr. and Mariska Hargitay together toasting King Will Ferrell at the Bacchus Parade. It was sweeter still to see them smiling and slinging beads again Monday night February 11, 2013 at he Orpheus Parade.

A newer romance that graced the streets of this years New Orleans Mardi Gras was the recently affianced couple, Grand Marshal Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock. While some say things with the anticipation of a wedding for Ms. Clarkson, the couple seemed quite happy and cuddly as the Endymion Krewe escorted them to the Superdome.

While the new romances in the lives of celebrities catch the public eye a more mature yet still young relationship deserves mention. The first time the New Orleans City Commision President, Jacquelyn Brechtel Clarkson and her husband, Arthur crossed my path they were coming out of the Mayor’s Mardi Gras ball a couple years ago. The love and companionship between them was obvious and sweet.

Last year the strong, enduring love was still flowing and indeed, glowing with pride as they toasted their daughter, Patricia Clarkson, as she reigned in the 2012 Muses parade.
This afternoon on Mardi Gras day I had a brief chat with Commission President Brechtel Clarkson and asked if her husband was there. She said after years of carrying the little ones on his shoulders she gave him the day off and lets him pick and chose a few events to attend and sit out the rest. Even in his absence the affection she has for him was evident in her voice.

New romance is hot and sweet but a romance that has endured for decades is impossible to beat!

Happy Mardi Gras and Happy Valentines Day from New Orleans!
