Roman Polanski, 76 fled from the US in 1978 after pleading guilty to having sex with a 13-year-old girl in California. Polanski was arrested in Switzerland on Saturday, according to the Associated Press.
Polanski was to receive a lifetime achievement award at the Zurich Film Festival, and was held there. He won an Oscar in 2002 for Best Director for The Pianist. He also directed Rosemary’s Baby and Chinatown.
A warrant was issued for his arrest more than 30 years ago before he was sentenced. Polanski has never returned to the US, but has tried to get the case against him dismissed. A California judge demanded that the director return to the US to apply for dismissal in person, but he hasn’t because he fears that he will be arrested. AP Photo.
The Swiss Federal Department of Justice and Police said that a decision to extradite him is subject to judicial procedure.
His second wife, Sharon Tate was one of the victims of the Mason killings in 1969. She was murdered by Susan Atkins…who died in prison a few days ago. And Polanski's good friend, Jack Nickolson's was dating Anjelica Huston, daughter of director John Huston.
A controversial documentary about the life of Roman Polanski was screened at the Sundance Film Festival, in Park City, Utah in 2008. HBO bought all domestic rights to the film, while Weinstein Co. purchased the international rights to the documentary, according to UPI.
