Rolls-Royce plug-in hybrid is on its way

The iconic ultra luxury automaker, Rolls-Royce, has announced it will launch its very first plug-in hybrid model that consumers should expect in about two to three years down the line according to Auto Express.

The company contends that its well-to-do buyers seldomly, if at all, complain about fuel economy but the company needs to get greener so that it can better comply with the ever-demanding worldwide government lower emissions regulations.

The British automaker's last attempt at going green was with its all-electric 100EX Phantom in 2011. The electric vehicle was reportedly, viewed by about 100 customers who were ambivalent about it. The Phantom's testers were not too impressed with the car's range and recharging times.

Most of the zero-emission, luxury, machine-to-be's components will be sourced from the parent company, BMW. According to Rolls-Royce's CEO Torsten Müller-Otvos, who thinks that the potentially plug-in hybrid will combine "the advantages of both worlds," stated at the Geneva Motor Show, "We are now a completely self-sustaining business, but technology like [a plug-in hybrid drivetrain] is so expensive to develop that without BMW, Rolls-Royce would probably not have survived."

As far as pricing, will the next generation Phantom hit the stratosphere dollar-wise because of the new technology? Well according to Müller-Otvos, the über-rich need not fret about emptying their piggy banks for the car, "It is never a question of not having enough to afford a Rolls-Royce, but our customers are shrewd business people, and they want to know what they are getting for their money. For that reason I think for the next car we will stay in the same position in the market – which has been so successful for us so far.”

By the by, Rolls-Royce's arch enemy Bentley has already confirmed that it is working on launching a hybrid version for all their future models beginning with an SUV.

Now the question remains…are the filthy rich really environmentally conscious?
