Rolling Stones album and tour in 2011: 'No concrete plans' yet, say band reps

The Rolling Stones: Will they or won't they have a new album and tour in 2011? A day after Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards made headlines for telling BBC 6 Music that the band is eying a new album and tour in 2011, the band's representatives have released a statement clarifying that nothing has been made official yet for a new Stones album and tour.

The statment reads: "There are no concrete plans for the Rolling Stones to tour. The same applies to rumors that they are going into the studio soon to record a new album."

Some websites and other media outlets have reported that the Stones might have European stadium concert dates for the summer of 2011. However, that timeline seems very unlikely, because if the Stones do launch a new tour in 2011, it probably won't be earlier than the last quarter of 2011. According to what various people in the Stones camp and concert business have said, a Rolling Stones tour takes at least a year to plan.

Meanwhile, Richards and fellow Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood have made it clear in recent interviews that they're eager to do a new Stones album and tour, and that the band will have a summit in December 2010 to discuss future plans. Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts told Billboard in an October 2010 interview that the Stones will do a new album and tour when Richards and Wood get bored. Meanwhile, Rolling Stones lead singer Mick Jagger (the band member who is most involved in organizing the Stones' business affairs) hasn't made any public comment about a new Stones album or tour since his band mates gave these interviews.

The most recent Stones studio album of new songs was 2005’s Grammy-nominated "A Bigger Bang," and the accompanying tour lasted from 2005 to 2007.

A lot of people are wondering if the next Rolling Stones tour will be of mostly stadiums (such as their "Voodoo Lounge" and "Bridges to Babylon" treks in the 1990s) or if most of the shows be at smaller venues, such as the arenas or theaters that the Stones played during their "Licks" and "A Bigger Bang" tours in the first decade of the 21st century. Whatever type of tour the Stones do next, it will no doubt do what Stones tours normally do: thrill millions of people and break sales records.
