In what can only be described as an odd turn-of-events the roller-derby player I wrote about last December from FoCo Girls Gone Derby and the Choice City Rebels who was shot in the head by her fiancee last October begged a judge on Monday to be reunited with the man who allegedly tried to kill her.
Roller girl, Sarah Harris was shot in the head by her fiancee Raphael Ogaz-Montoya, this pst October. The Prosecutors Office says Ogaz-Montoya was drunk at the time of the shooting, which followed his abuse during a dispute.
Both Harris and Ogaz-Montoya state that the discharge of the gun into her skull was accidental, and Harris tearfully begged Judge Stephen Howard to lift a restraining order allowing Harris to return to Ogaz-Montoya.
Prosecutors objected to Harris' request which is keeping her away from the home she was almost killed in, the home she shared with Ogaz-Montoya.
“I feel safe. I believe this was an accident,” Harris said, dabbing away tears. “I love him and I want to be with him.”
Judge Howard denied her request.
Ogaz-Montoya is due back in court March 1 for a preliminary hearing where is charged with first-degree assault. Ogaz-Montoya originally faced a lesser assault charge, but Harris’ roller-derby teammates lobbied heavily to increase the charges, because in their words this was not an accidental shooting.
Harris' derby sisters had raised money for her medical bills while she spent weeks in the hospital. They had even sat in court for her. But on Monday Harris did not sit with those who supported her over the last few months, Harris sat near Ogaz-Montoya and his family.
