Aug. 17 and Aug. 18 were the dates for the first and final rounds of Chicago Park District’s 86th Midwest Amateur Golf Tournament. This tournament was at Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course. (Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course is at 3600 N. Recreation Drive in Chicago, Ill.) This event’s champion is Robert Steele. (The scoring format was stroke play.)
The temperatures for both dates were 70 degrees – 80 degrees. Skies were blue. Roger Steele posted 71 for his final round on Sunday. On Saturday, Steel posted 72. These scores give him a 143 total.
Johnston Cully won the second place award. On Sunday, Cully’s final score was 75. His first score on Saturday was 71. These scores total 146.
Two players won the third place award—Huy Doan and Robert Peck. Both contestants had 148 totals. For Huy Doan it was 71 on Sunday and 77 on Saturday. For Robert Peck, it was 78 on Sunday and 70 on Saturday.
Although some of the fairways had spots with light brown (tawny) grass, green was dominant on the fairways, teeing grounds and putting greens. Of course, groundskeepers tuned this course by cutting the fairway, rough, around the bunkers, putting green and putting green fringe at different heights. I do not know if the contestants had their own caddies to give them advice for clubs and distances, and to carry golf bags.
The final, Chicago Park District golf tournament for the year will be Sep. 14-Sep. 15. This will be at Robert A. Black Golf Course. The scoring format will be modified Stableford. The entry deadline for this final tournament is Sep. 7, 2013.
