In a rain-delayed third round match at the Monte-Carlo Tennis Masters, Roger Federer fell to fellow Swiss tennis player, Stanislas Wawrinka. Wawrinka, the 13th seed at the tournament, defeated his Beijing Olympics gold-medal winning doubles partner and number 2 seed, Roger Federer 6-4, 7-5.
Federer has been the runner-up at the Monte-Carlo Masters tournament for the past three years, each time losing to Rafael Nadal. This is Federer’s earliest exit at the clay court tournament since 2002, when he was defeated in the second round.
Stanislas Wawrinka’s win over Federer is his first victory over the former world number one player. Their last meeting was in Dubai on hard courts in 2006, resulting in a straight sets win for Federer. This was their first head-to-head match on clay.
Playing in his first clay-court tournament of the year, Federer is still trying to find his rhythm.
“I thought I had decent timing on my backhand,” said Federer. “I was playing it okay, trying to mix it up as well. But my forehand was hurting me in the beginning. I was making a few too many errors. That kind of gave him the advantage. I thought Stan played well.”
Wawrinka moves on to the next round to face German qualifier Andreas Beck, who defeated Argentine Juan Monaco 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Roger Federer moves on to his next French Open clay court tune-up tournament, likely the Rome Tennis Masters on April 27.
