Federer's announcement came when the tennis world was still digesting that world number two Novak Djokovic had added Boris Becker to his coaching team. On the day that Djokovic lost his number one ranking, the Serb approached the German superstar.

"I was approached by Novak and his manager while he was playing in Beijing," Becker told BBC Sport. “He decided he needed somebody in his corner that had been there and done it. I was surprised - I didn't expect the phone call. I was very honored."

Turning to former tennis greats for coaching seems to have started with Andy Murray and Ivan Lendl. The Brit has enjoyed the most success of his career by capturing two Grand Slams during Lendl's supervision.

Other top ATP player comparable moves include Japan's number one Kei Nishikori signing Michael Chang, Goran Ivanisevic with Marin Cilic and Sergi Bruguera and Richard Gasquet.

In 2014, tennis fans are going to have a challenge splitting attention between the action on the court and viewing the tennis legends in the coaching boxes.
