Roger Daltrey flies solo to Florida
Roger Daltrey hit the road again this year...but on his own. Tonight, he is featured in the spotlight at the Barbara B. Mann Hall, in Ft. Myers; tomorrow he is at the Hard Rock Cafe, in Hollywood, FL and finally, Sunday he finishes up in Clearwater at Ruth Eckerd Hall.
The 65 year old rocker says it feels good; that he does not have to play anyone else’s fiddle. His set will include some R&B and possibly some Johnny Cash...a long stretch from the Who’s usual set—which he states he will not sing on this tour. Seeing as the blues influenced him in his early days, there are sure to be some of this brand added to the evening’s tunes.
Daltrey started his ‘Use it or Lose it’ tour to keep his chords fresh while the Who is on hiatus. He claims some of the best moments of his more than 50 year career have come while on this solo tour. Being a long time country fan, Daltrey actually got to play the Grand Ole Opry and considers it one of the greatest concerts of his spanning career—as he said when you are on that stage you can feel the spirits of the stars that formed his early years.
Even now that he can be categorized as a ‘seasoned’ performer, Daltrey still sounds impeccable. Catching some clips of the 2008 Rock Honors tribute to the band that featured covers of Who classics from the Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Incubus and even Adam Sandler (of course the who closed the gig) will prove this point. Roger claims he can still hit all the notes—even the especially high ones, just takes more warming up and also recovery time.
He claims he has enjoyed every minute of this solo tour and describes it as a very relaxed, loose show. It is beyond his dreams and feels magical to him; however, this is no way means that the Who is finished. Even after more than four decades there is talk of yet another tour to come from these masters of their craft and numerous rock operas.
Tickets may still be available at: www.ticketron.com, so be sure to check prior to going to the locations...this is one of the most distinguished rock influences playing smaller, more intimate arenas. Enjoy and let us know how it went...very sorry to have had to pass on attending, so any reports or reviews would be greatly appreciated.
