Legendary baseball player Roger Clemens is reacting to the death of country music star Mindy McCready, calling her apparent suicide “sad news,” according to a Feb. 18 Associated Press report.
Clemens, who is now a special instructor with the Houston Astros, reportedly handed reporters a written statement on Feb. 18 at the team's spring training camp in Kissimmee, Fla. According to the written statement, Clemens says he had heard that “she was trying to get peace and direction in her life.” He noted that McCready and her manager/agent were “extremely nice” during the “few times” he saw the late star.
Clemens and McCready have had their own share of headlines. In April 2008, the troubled country musician claimed she had a longtime relationship with Clemens, according to the Associated Press.
News reports at the time indicated that she met the baseball great at a Florida bar when she was only 15. He was reportedly 28 and married at the time. Clemens, for his part, denied that the pair had a relationship.
McCready was found dead at her home in Herber Springs, Ark. She reportedly shot her dog and then shot herself.
