The UFC announced on Thursday that Roger Bowling will drop down to lightweight and take on Anthony Njokuani at UFC on FOX 7.
The event will take place on April 20 in San Jose, Calif. at the HP Pavilion. The bout will air live on either FX or Facebook.
Bowling (11-3) will be making his UFC debut after coming over from Strikeforce. The Cincinnati native signed with the UFC once Strikeforce closed its doors for good in January.
“Relentless” worked his way up through the ranks in the Cincinnati based MMA promotion MMA Big Show. The 30-year-old went 6-0 in the promotion and won the welterweight title.
Bowling made his Strikeforce debut in 2010 and alternated wins and losses until winning back-to-back fights against Jerron Peoples and Brandon Saling. In his last fight, Bowling lost by decision to Strikeforce welterweight champion Tarec Saffiedine.
Njokuani (15-7) is coming off a decision loss to Rafael Dos Anjos in July. The Nigerian born fighter has lost three out of his five UFC fights.
The 32-year-old came to the UFC after the WEC was shut down. Njokunai went 4-3 in the WEC which includes a loss to UFC lightweight champ Benson Henderson in his WEC debut.
UFC on FOX 7 will be headlined by a lightweight title fight between Benson Henderson and Gilbert Melendez. Also on the card, Frank Mir will take on Daniel Cormier and Matt Brown will fight Dan Hardy.
