Rod Stewart confirms that he's planning to reunite with the Faces in 2015

Rod Stewart has confirmed that he is planning to reunite with the Faces in 2015. He did not go into further details about whether or not it would be a few performances or a full-scale tour.

In an interview with Boston radio station WZLX on Dec. 2, 2013, this is what Stewart said when he was asked about reuniting with the Faces: "We're earmarking 2015."

As previously reported, Stewart nixed the idea to reunite with the Faces in 2014, since guitarist Ronnie Wood will be touring with the Rolling Stones that year. (Click here for the tour dates announced so far for the Rolling Stones' "14 on Fire" tour in 2014.)

Before Wood joined the Rolling Stones in the mid-1970s, he was in the Faces, whose original lineup consisted of lead singer Stewart, bass player Ronnie Lane, keyboardist Ian McLagan and drummer Kenney Jones. The Faces formed in 1969, and broke up in 1975, but had rare, one-off reunions in the 1980s and 1990s. Lane died of multiple sclerosis in 1997.

In 2008, the surviving members of the original Faces lineup reunited for a private rehearsal. Although there had been much speculation that the Faces would do a reunion tour with Stewart in 2009, that tour never happened.

In 2010 and 2011, the Faces did reunion tours without Stewart, who declined to participate in those reunions. Simply Red lead singer Mick Hucknall did lead vocals on those tours. Glen Matlock, formerly of the Sex Pistols, played bass in the revamped Faces reunion shows.

Wood is the only member of the Rolling Stones to have two inductions in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1989, he was inducted as a member of the Stones. In 2012, he was inducted for his work with the Faces. Stewart also has two inductions in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: as a solo artist and as a member of the Faces. Jones also has two Rock and Rock Hall of Fame inductions: as a member of the Who and as a member of the Faces.

According to the Daily Mail, there were plans for the Faces to reunite with Stewart for a 2014 tour, but the Stones' tour plans, as well as Stewart's demands to make more money than the rest of the Faces, essentially jettisoned the proposed Faces reunion tour of 2014.

An unnamed source told the Daily Mail: "Rod’s team wanted him to get a larger share of the profits because he was the original frontman of the group. But Ronnie has made a name for himself as a huge star with the Stones since being in the Faces and the rest of the band didn’t agree that Rod should get such a big cut of the money."

Jones said, "We all want to do a Faces tour to get it off our chests. We parted in the wrong way and it would put that wrong to right."

Stewart commented, "I’d like to return. Ronnie and I talk about it, and when the Stones finish – Mick [Jagger] is several years older than me – we’ll have an opportunity, if we’re not on Zimmers."

The source commented on the 2014 Rolling Stones tour: '‘They are arranging dates around the world. They will also headline the opening of Australia’s revamped Adelaide Oval cricket ground next year."

Stewart and Wood have remained close friends, even though Stewart has distanced himself from any recent Faces reunions. Wood and Stewart have performed on stage together several times since the original Faces lineup disbanded. Stewart was also one of the best men at Wood's 2012 wedding to Wood's third wife, Sally Humphreys. (Paul McCartney was the other best man at the wedding.)

Dec. 20, 2013 update: It seems as if Stewart and McLagan have very different plans for when Stewart might reunite with the Faces. McLagan told Uncut magazine that in 2015, he wants to do a revival of the Small Faces, the band that was the predecessor to the Faces: "Why would we f*ck around with the Faces when we've got bigger fish to fry?" McLagan added that a Faces reunion with Stewart will "have to wait until 2016 because 2015 is the Small Faces' year."
