The crash occurred just after midnight on Sept. 5 along Lowell Avenue in Central Islip. Investigators believe the 2005 Acura LT was traveling southbound along Lowell Avenue when the driver, 19-year-old Ulices Canessa Villatoro, of Islip Terrace, lost control and struck several trees on the side of the road.
Andrew O’Connor, 18, of Rocky Point, was seated in the rear seat on the driver’s side of the vehicle. He was critically injured in the crash and died at Southside Hospital after succumbing to his injuries, police said.
A second backseat passenger – George Shody, 17, of Islip Terrace, suffered back injuries. Villatoro – the driver – was treated for a fractured arm and possible fractured hip, police said. Both were treated and released from Southside Hospital.
Joel Fernandez, 18, of Islip Terrace, was seated in the front passenger seat when the car left the roadway. He was not injured in the crash.
Detectives impounded the car for a safety check and said an investigation is ongoing. No charges were filed, as of Thursday afternoon.
