According to police, Ulmer slammed her 2000 BMW into the rear of a parked tractor-trailer along N. Center Avenue near Meehan Street in Rockville Centre just before 6 a.m. on Sunday.
A front seat passenger, Jennifer Alexis, 21, of Bayside, Queens, was killed during the collision, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
In court documents, Ulmer reportedly told officers that Alexis “grabbed my arm” immediately before the crash. “My friend told me to turn and I didn’t want to. She grabbed my arm and I turned the wheel. I had one Long Island Iced Tea,” she is quoted as saying in an oral admission submitted to the court.
Police allege that Ulmer was “intoxicated by alcohol” during the time of the crash. Prosecutors said she consented to a blood sample to determine her blood-alcohol content, but the results were not available for the Monday morning court proceeding. Ulmer is quoted as providing an oral admission to officers as her blood was being drawn at the Central Testing Section, authorities said.
With her parents in the courtroom, Ulmer stood silent before Judge Eric Bjorneby at First District Court in Hempstead. Her attorney, Frederick Brewington, said Ulmer was finishing her last semester at Nassau County Community College and worked at a department store. Noting that she has no prior arrests, Brewington asked that she be released without bail.
Ulmer’s parents declined to answer questions as they left the arraignment. An unidentified man with the family shouted expletives at reporters as they exited the courthouse.
“This is an unfortunate set of circumstances for this young lady,” Brewington said. “One thing that’s real clear here is that she is heartbroken over the loss of a friend. This is a set of circumstances where there is a no win scenario.”
Police said Ulmer was treated Sunday at South Nassau Communities Hospital after complaining about pain from the crash. According to court documents, she suffered “bumps and bruises.”
Attempts to reach Alexis’ family at their Queens home were unsuccessful.
Ulmer is due back in court on Wednesday.
