Summer is finally in sight for New York City, and with it comes the usual plethora of rock concerts and all day festivals. Adding a unique twist to the joys of summer rock and roll is the Rocks Off Concert Cruise series, the only way to watch your favorite bands and tributes while also enjoying a quality sightseeing cruise around the Manhattan waterways.
Rocks Off has firmly established themselves as one of New York's most dedicated concert production organizations, and the concert cruises are their flagship program. For the cost of an ordinary concert ticket, fans board one of six comfortable vessels to be face to face with their favorite musicians in an extremely intimate setting. Multiple decks (and bars) allow passengers to enjoy the air and catch stunning sights of the city and bridges throughout the show while enjoying the music over the PA system, though it's a shame to skip the entire performance - no other venue lets you get this close and personal to the talent.
The series hosts a wide variety of acts, from heavy metal to jazz and everything in between. Pink Floyd tribute The Machine are perennial favorites, with the spacey rock music a perfect soundtrack to a sunset over Jersey City while drifting through the water - read my review of last year's performance here. Other upcoming shows of note include tributes to Bruce Springsteen, Tool, and Sublime, as well as a show from stoner metal favorites Clutch.
The fine folks at Rocks Off also host cruises to Citifield for Mets games, and are even offering a 'booze bus' package to the Motley Crue & Poison concert at Nassau Coliseum, which includes a ticket and ride to the show with your fellow glam metalheads. The first cruise actually starts this Friday night, with a 1:00 am cruise for the Insane Clown Posse afterparty. Non-Juggalos can catch Springsteen tribute The E Street Shuffle the very next day.
