Rockmart police officer placed on administrative leave pending investigation

A Rockmart police officer has been placed on administrative leave pending a GBI investigation

Randy Poole, an officer with the Rockmart police department has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of an investigation by the GBI.The investigation is a result of accusations of child abuse from his teen daughter. The allegations stem from an incident that occurred on Thursday, February 3, 2011 at Officer Poole's residence and reported to the Rockmart police department one week later on Thursday, February 10, 2011.

The 911 call that led to the report originated from his daughter while she was at the Rockmart Wal-Mart. Rockmart Police Sgt. Walters responded to the call and transported the teen from Wal Mart to the Rockmart police station.

Rockmart Police Chief Keith Sorrells requested that the investigation be handled by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The public should be reminded that although there is an active investigation into the allegations, no formal charges have been filed against Officer Poole at this time. If the investigation concludes that the allegations against Poole are valid, a formal indictment by a grand jury will be filed.

A background investigation revealed that Poole was asked to resign from the City of Doraville police department in January of 1995. Poole's lawyer at that time said the officer was fired for blowing the whistle on a DUI quota system. Poole took his case to the Doraville City Council on February 6, 1995 but the panel upheld the police departments recommendation that Poole resign. Major Mark Welsh of the Doraville police department stated that Poole's resignation was requested because of other infractions but declined to name the offense.

Officer Poole has always been great at his job and a good friend. He talks to the kids at the school and tells us to keep moving forward with our education. He is a great inspiration and I believe that Poole deserves to wear his badge. My family and I will be praying for him because he showed he cared for us so we are giving back the same love he shared.

Officer Poole in My opinion is ONE of the best officers on the Rockmart Force, you couldn`t ask for a nicer and politer officer, Children today are using the system to get to their parents which is so wrong, kids today need a Switch put on their butts like we used to get, Their is a difference between whipping and abusive, I guess my parents today would have been put in prison, It didn`t warp my mind, maybe just the butt, Randy, you are in our prayers.

He's already been fired before (for cause) and now this? Somethings not right with this clown and he definitely doesn't need to be around any firearms. Can't Rockmart hire better officers than this?

  • Susie the clown 1 year ago

    Dear Snuffy,
With a name like that you obviously know alot about clowns. There are alot of sad and vindictive people in the world, and as you may have been told in the past- There is always two sides to every story. Be very careful casting stones- you may find yourself the victim of falsehoods some day and hopefully someone UNLIKE yourself may give you the benefit of the doubt. Or at least WAIT for ALL the details before passing judgement. And as for the name comment, I pray that is not a birth name. Surely not? P.S- Try reading Matthew 7:1-5

    Tammy,

You overlooked or omitted a very pertinent detail in your research of Officer Poole's situation. Most folks know, he is in the midst of a custody battle with his ex of 6yrs. That fact gives reason to pause and ponder the true origin of the allegations. It would be responsible journalism to include as much info as you can, we look forward to another report from you soon.
    Thanks !

My report focuses on the investigation at hand, it is not my job to delve into his personal life outside of the investigation. If the GBI investigations finds no wrong doing on Officer Poole's part, that will be reported as well. The GBI is handling the investigation..not me.

    hey snuffy
if you noticed in the article the CAUSE the officer was fired for was for stopping the unfair and unlawful practice of ticket quotas! DUH! he was standing up and doing the right thing for ordinary people. they retaliated against him for doing the right thing. pay attention would ya?

  • Tammy Overstreet 1 year ago

actually..if you are paying attention, Doraville police stated that he was fired for other infractions and Officer Poole is the one who said he was fired for whistleblowing. This would be a case of which side you choose to believe. I don't know which side is correct.
