Rockmart mother requests leniency for teen son charged with armed robbery

In a Fox 5 interview that aired yesterday, a Rockmart mother requested mercy for her teen son who is facing numerous felony charges as the result of a residential burglary as well as the armed robbery of a local convenience store.

The teen's mother, April Michelle Sorrells reached out to Fox 5 news and requested an interview to voice her concerns. She spoke with news anchor Patty Pan after a crime spree that resulted in the arrest of her son on numerous charges including armed robbery, burglary and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

It all began on Thursday, January 9, 2014 when the thirteen-year old boy broke into a home in the area of Hampton Street and Smith Street in Rockmart. The teen stole several items including a handgun and a red Jeep. While traveling on Hwy 27, the Jeep either ran out of gas or broke down and left the teen stranded. The teen then made his way into Plaza Food Mart in Cedartown where he walked inside armed with a gun and held up two convenience store clerks and demanded a car.

The teen then took off in the second stolen vehicle, wrecking it just a short distance from the store and fled the scene.
The teen was apprehended soon after and remains in custody at a juvenile detention center at the time of this publication.

Sorrells spoke with Fox 5 news anchor Patty Pan where she attempted to give explanations as to why her son stole the vehicle and expressed her concerns over her son becoming part of "the system".
