Summer temperatures and humidity have returned to the Rockford Metro area after more than a month hiatus. High temperatures will warm to the upper 80’s to near 90 degrees in some spots Tuesday across much of Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin. Temperatures on Wednesday will creep even higher and hit, if not exceed 90 degrees in some spots for the first time since middle of July, when Rockford hit 93 degrees back on July 19th! With the heat, humidity, and lighter winds, air quality will not be good over the next several days, with very high pollen counts as the ragweed season jumps into high gear. Children and the elderly are recommended to stay indoors.
Tuesday will mark the 8th consecutive day in Rockford with no precipitation recorded. The last measurable precipitation was recorded back on August 11th, when Rockford received 0.05 of rain. After a record start to the year, after a very wet spring, July and August have both posted precipitation deficits. July was just over 2 inches below the normal and August is running 1.57” below normal, with not much rain forecast through the remainder of the month.
Some relief is in sight as a cold front moves across the region late Wednesday night and Thursday morning. A cold front will approach the region late Wednesday and we should see scattered showers and thunderstorms develop affecting up to 50% of the forecast area, lasting into Thursday morning. If we don’t see much rain Wednesday Night/Thursday morning, it could be until early next week before the next decent chance of much needed rain for our local area farmers and everyone’s browning lawns and plants.
High pressure will move back into the region on Friday, with modestly lower humidity. However, temperatures and humidity will creep higher starting on Saturday and more so on Sunday. Humid conditions and temperatures near or exceeding 90 degrees look like a good bet to start next week and should last through the end of the month.
