Rock your smile: Dental health in the Burlington area

February has been named National Children's Dental Health Month by the the American Dental Association. Everyone agrees that oral hygiene is crucially important, especially for our kids – but how do you pay for dental care in a world where the cost of care and health insurance just keeps climbing?

The first place to look for low-to-mid income Vermont families should be Dr Dynasaur, the state of Vermont SCHIP program. Income guidelines are higher than many people assume, with a family of four able to earn up to $5763 a month (gross) and still qualify for benefits. Kids can qualify for Dr Dynasaur even if they have health insurance through their parents' employer or privately purchased plans, and kids are not subject to the “12 month waiting period” that comes up when adults apply for Vermont state health care benefits. To apply for benefits, call 1-800-250-8427, or apply online. Kids can also sometimes be eligible for 3 months of retroactive coverage.

What if your child needs care immediately, or you don't qualify for Dr Dynasaur for some reason? Consider the Dental Clinic at the Community Health Center in Burlington or Vermont Dental Care in Winooski. If your child does not have dental insurance, these clinics may be willing to work on a sliding scale based on family income.

There is no question that children need good quality dental care to have good oral health, which in turn affects all aspects of their physical health. While your child is waiting for their appointment, the ADA has also put together a few fun puzzle sheets for kids to enjoy!
