Rock-Tenn Co. is closing its recycling center in Evansville, Ind., after Friday, March 15, 2013, according to a local company source. The recycling facility is located at 1520 N. Fifth Avenue. The aluminum can recycling portion is already closed to the public, and no further materials of any sort will be accepted for recycling after March 15. The company has not yet responded to a query to its headquarters in Norcross, Ga., regarding the closing.
The recycling center had previously been operated by Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. Smurfit entered bankruptcy in 2009, and after reorganization, was purchased by and made a division of Rock-Tenn, a major producer of containerboard packaging.
The Evansville Rock-Tenn facility was one of five aluminum recycling centers in the vicinity of Evansville that paid cash for cans and often paid the highest local price. The four remaining local recycling facilities that pay cash for aluminum cans are:
