The Sports Authority Rock 'n' Roll Denver Marathon and 1/2 Marathon is no longer just for runners. On Monday Competitor announced that they're adding the Rock 'n' Roll Denver Bike Tour to the event.

"We chose Denver because it is such a fit city and we knew that there were a lot of avid cyclists in town," said Kari Logan, the Event Director.

Starting right before the marathon and half marathon on September 22, the Rock 'n' Roll Denver Bike Tour will take 750 cyclists on a 24-mile ride through the city. It will start and finish near Civic Center Park, separate from the runners. The route will follow most of the full marathon course except for Washington Park, due to overcrowding.

"It's fun riding a bike when all of the roads are closed because it doesn't happen very often," said Logan. "You get to start out when it's dark and see the sunrise. It's a nice way to start the day."

The Bike Tour is untimed, geared more toward recreational cyclists than those looking to compete. A lead vehicle will pace the cyclists at a maximum of 20 miles per hour.

"There’s so many different competitive bike races out there that we wanted to make this more of an opportunity to come out and see the course and enjoy the bands but do it on a bike," said Logan.

Last fall Competitor added a bike tour to the San Antonio Marathon and 1/2 Marathon. The event was a huge hit, selling out in just over a month.

This year it's not possible to do both the Bike Tour and the marathon or half marathon, but Logan isn't ruling it out for 2013. "I like the idea. We should consider it in the future because people definitely like a challenge," said Logan.

Each cyclist will get a technical shirt, an inaugural Bike Tour finisher's medal, and all of the finish line perks of the runners. Participants must be at least 12 years old and no tandem bikes or unicycles will be allowed.

Registration is $60 and is available online until the cap of 750 cyclists is met. Registration is also open for the 2012 Sports Authority Rock 'n' Roll Denver Marathon and 1/2 Marathon.
