This year’s nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have one extra chance of being inducted as part of the Class of 2014: music fans’ popular vote. While inductees are traditionally chosen solely by an n elite group of 500 to 600 music industry professionals, this year one nominee will also be inducted based on popular vote.
The new approach to fan participation is one way the Hall of Fame is addressing criticism that their choices are sometimes questionable and exclusionary. The museum’s voting party has overlooked many of Rock’s most revolutionary artists for years. In 2013, fan favorite Rush was finally inducted, after years of fan outrage over their exclusion from the Rock Hall of Fame. This year, music lovers can have a voice in getting their top pick inducted.
Black sheep in the Hall of Fame's contentious list of snubs, KISS, are currently in the lead for fans votes. They are nearly tied for the to spot with pivotal Grunge band Nirvana. Fans are invited to choose five nominees from the list of sixteen candidates. Anyone can vote at: http://www.rockhall.com/get-involved/interact/poll/
Besides KISS, and Nirvana, the other nominees for the Class of 2014 include: Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Disco group Chic, Deep Purple (who failed to be inducted as nominees in 2013), Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates, one of Rock’s first “cross-over” artists LL Cool J, The Meters, Rap group N.W.A., The Replacements, Linda Ronstadt, Cat Stevens, 50’s electric guitarist Link Wray who introduced a unique style of electric guitar distortion and power chords, Prog Rock band Yes, and 60’s vocalists The Zombies.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame plans to announce six performer inductees, including the winner of the fan popular vote, in the coming weeks. In addition to the artists, a select few innovators from other aspects of the Rock and Roll music industry will also be chosen for induction into the Rock Hall of Fame. A ceremony honoring the newest inductees will be held in the spring of 2014 (location and date TBD).
