After a one-year absence the state’s most successful competitive cheer program will be returning to the Deltaplex in Grand Rapids to vie for the Michigan State Competitive Cheer Championships to be held this Friday. Rochester High School finished in third place at the Regional competition at Lake Orion High School on Saturday to earn the birth.
Also advancing, and earning the regional championship for Division I of the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MSHAA) was Stoney Creek High School. Meanwhile Rochester Adams, the third of the three high schools in the Rochester Community School District, was eliminated for the season.
It was a close competition with six teams entering the second round within one point of each other and the third and final round within less than two points of each other. However, strong third rounds by Rochester, Stoney Creek, and Southgate Anderson opened the margins.
Rochester has long been the most admired cheer program, winning the state championship more than all other Michigan teams combined. They have been state champions.12 times since 1994. Only Grandville (4 times) and Stoney Creek (once) have interrupted their reign.
Representing the western half of the state will be Hartland, Hudsonville, Grandville, and East Kentwood. Holland West Ottawa, which won the cross-state competition at the Deltaplex two weeks ago, which is generally considered a prelude to the state championship, west eliminated in the western regional.
