While Dunta Robinson continues to go about his business being disgruntled, doors are opening for some of the Texans young corners.
The player set to benefit the most from Robinson's absence is 4th round draft pick Glover Quin.
Entering the third week of Texans OTAs, Quin is getting a ton of reps at both corner positions, nickel, special teams and returns. Equate it to trial by fire and drinking from a fire hose.
But based on comments from the coaches, Quin seems to be up to the challenge.
"He just seems like he makes a play every day," said Texans head coach Gary Kubiak of Quin after the OTA session today. "He’s got a knack for getting his hands on the ball and when he does, he tends to come up with it."
Kubiak cites Robinson's absence as a good opportunity for Quin.
"[Quin is] getting a great deal of reps because of Dunta’s situation," said Kubiak, "so [it's a] good chance for him to help the team quickly. When a player’s out, everybody moves up in the line."
But let's be real about this for a minute. It's early June, it's OTAs, they're in shorts and learning basics.
So it's probably a good idea to stifle notions of greatness for this draft class (and not just the 4th round corner) until they have a chance to prove it on the field with pads on and when the games count.
As far as the vets, Jacques Reeves and Fred Bennett are running first team corner. Antwaun Molden is still recovering from a mid-December ankle break and may not be ready until regular season - which is one of the reasons Quin is on a crash course.
Meanwhile, there's nothing new on the Dunta front. At least what's been reported publicly.
John McClain of the Houston Chronicle has been reporting that Dunta won't be back until the Monday before the season opener against the Jets.
If that's the case, Dunta should have to get in line to get his job back, given Reeves and Bennett are healthy and playing well entering the regular season. I wonder when or if Dunta will realize there's a possibility that he's getting bad advice.
But we move on and back at OTA's, Frank Bush and Bill Kollar are working on an improved pass rush that would be just what the doctor ordered for Reeves, Bennett and the rest of the Texans secondary that's been much maligned in years past.
The quote of the day goes to defensive backs coach David Gibbs who said "the other two rookies are doing good, too—(CB Brice) McCain and…I can’t remember my other guy’s name right now. But he’s doing good, so we’ll see what happens.”
If that other guy is Troy Nolan, I'd say he needs to step it up - at least to the point where coach can remember your name after three weeks of practice.
