Robinson Cano will spend part of his off-season looking for a new contract. The New York Yankees and other Major League Baseball teams were given a taste of what the All-Star second baseball is looking for.
Astronomical numbers like a free-agent deal for ten-years in the neighborhood of $300 million have been tossed around. That's quite a neighborhood.
Cano changed agents this season, from the notoriously tough Scott Boras who made the Alex Rodriguez-N.Y. Yankees ten-year $275 million deal back in 2007, to CAA and Jay-Z's Roc Nation.
He must believe that someone other than Boras can mine gold like that again.
Meanwhile, down in the Dominican Republic, Robinson Cano has a three-year old son with Jackelin Castro, 39 and is on the other end of contract negotiations.
Reported today by Mike Fish of ESPN.com, there is a child-support wrangle going on between Cano and Castro, a divorced mother of three other children. A court hearing in early November is scheduled in San Pedro de Macoris, DR.
"She and Cano were early into a pregnancy with twins when she suffered a miscarriage in 2009, according to Castro. In September 2010, she gave birth to their son. Castro told the ESPN program Outside the Lines (OTL) that the couple had a relationship of almost three years, starting in 2008. They lived together during the offseason, and she made trips in-season to New York."
In February 2013, Ms Castro rejected a formal contract for child support that would have amounted to approximately $600 per month. In exchange for that Cano would have been entitled to agreed-upon child visitation rights.
Castro is represented by attorney Wendy Diaz who characterizes Cano's payments as embarrassing.
"...the money he gives to the son, when he does, is not enough to feed the dogs of Robinson Cano's house.Maybe he is expending more money on the dogs and cars than he has on his own child."
The picture isn't a pretty one when you compare the support Cano pays to what he is seeking on the free-agent market.
Ms. Castro knows she is being called a gold-digger and doesn't care. This isn't a case of some random one-night stand. Cano and Castro were in a relationship that almost produced twins, and now Robinson Miguel Cano Castro.
You be the judge.
