Robin Thicke and Paula Patton split, but is it a surprise?

There are no blurred lines here. Singer Robin Thicke and his wife of eight years, Paula Patton, are calling it quits. In a statement to People magazine on Feb. 24, the longtime couple released a joint statement which said, “We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time.

Thicke and Patton, who were high school sweethearts, married in 2005 and welcomed son Julian in April 2010, bit the split doesn’t come as a total shock to some, especially after his raunchy Video Music Awards performance with Miley Cyrus last summer.

A source told Us Weekly the breakup had been “a long time coming.” Still, the duo definitely put on a happily married front.

In an interview last fall on “Oprah’s Next Chapter,” Thicke credited his wife for helping him come up with the idea for his racy “Blurred Lines” video, calling her a “wonderful, artistic partner.”

But he also added, “Of course, once you see the video back and you see your husband romping round with three topless girls, there’s going to be some jealousy, the same way I get jealous if she’s doing a love scene or something.” The singer described their union as a “functional dysfunctional marriage.”

In an interview with Elle, Thicke talked about fighting with his wife: “Oh yeah! Lock up the golf clubs,” he said. “Just lock it up! If you don’t fight, then you don’t care. If you’re not fighting for the relationship, you need to move on. But he also dished that their relationship was still steamy: "The spice is not our problem," he said of his relationship. "We're over spiced. We could probably take a few spices off the shelf."

That could explain the Instagram photo that showed him grabbing a female fan’s rear end at a Video Music Awards after party last summer. After Thicke joked to Oprah that there was “trick photography involved there," he elaborated on the situation.

“Let's just say, everybody had a good time that night,” he said. “We've had some fun and wild parties during our illustrious marriage and now we realize, you know, you can't even come into the after party without a confidentiality agreement now."
