Robin Roberts made returning to the Oscars a personal goal when she underwent treatment for MDS, a rare blood disorder. On Feb. 24, she made that dream a reality when she dazzled on the 2013 Oscars red carpet. This time last year, she realized something was very wrong and saw a doctor immediately after covering the red carpet for ABC. That’s when she received the devastating diagnosis.
After a bone marrow transplant and five grueling months of recovery, Robin Roberts finally returned to “GMA” last week. She said on air, “Hi, it’s Robin and I have been waiting 174 days to say this ‘Good morning, America.’” She added that she had to keep pinching herself to make sure her return was real and stated, “Faith, family and friends have brought me to this moment.”
On Sunday night, Roberts was simply dazzling in a cobalt blue velvet halter gown from Marc Bouwer’s 2013 collection. She was excited about the 2013 Oscars and posted the following Twitter messages on Feb. 23 and 24…
- “To my wonderful, beloved #TeamRobin…This one’s for you.”
- “Gorgeous morn in LA. Looking forward to being on #Oscars Red Carpet.”
- “Thanks one and all for your kind, warm messages about my special last night. Resting today in sunny LA so I’ll be ready for the red carpet!”
So, Robin’s triumphant return to the Oscars is yet another big achievement for the superstar warrior who doesn’t back down from a battle. She opened ABC’s Red Carpet Special by stating sincerely, “A year ago, I knew I wasn’t well. All I can say is what a difference a year makes!”
That it does. Since going public with her MDS battle, more than 56,000 people have registered to become bone marrow donors on Be The Match. In addition, more than $250,000 has been raised to support bone marrow research and treatment through the sale of Prayer for Protection wristbands.
