Robin Roberts opens up about health, happiness, and coming out on ‘Ellen’

Robin Roberts is experiencing a renewal of life. The “Good Morning America” host appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and opened up about her heath, coming out and her relationship with girlfriend Amber Laign, all of which have changed life as she knows it. In the interview with Ellen DeGeneres, which aired on Tuesday, Roberts said she has “never been this happy or healthy in such a long time.”

Roberts, who came out as gay in a Facebook post just four months ago, said the decision to share who she was with the world was inspired by her health and the renewal of life she has experienced. All of this is summed up in a recently released memoir written by the 53-year-old anchor titled “Everybody’s Got Something.” Roberts talked with Ellen about the support system she had around her, including girlfriend Amber Laign, who she says stayed by her side after she was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome.

When Ellen asked about Laign, Roberts gushed, explaining how they met and why the woman in her life doesn’t like to be in the spotlight as far as the public goes, but she was one of the spotlights during the most trying times of her life.

She told Ellen, “She’s very, very supportive and she’s been right there beside me every step of the way and it was actually the end of the year on my Facebook and I had been thanking my doctors, my nurses and my sister who was a perfect match and I said I want to say thank you.”

Roberts also thanked Ellen for being such a “trailbrazing” and paving the way for her to be able to come out. She stated that Ellen helped many people like herself “have that discussion with their families” about their sexuality. The respect and love Ellen commands helped instill the support and understanding that is necessary in the process of acceptance.

But the greatest element in both her recovery and her decision to come out is the strength she built and the approach to life she took. Out, proud, and enjoying life, Robin Roberts summed up the interview when she stated with a wide smile, “I am so thankful. I am so happy. I have never been this happy or healthy in such a long time.”
