Robin Roberts has publicly acknowledged for the first time that she is gay. Roberts’ friends and co-workers were well aware of this, but when Roberts wanted to thank all those who supported her through her recent health crisis. This included her lesbian partner, who was instrumental when it came to Roberts’ successful battle.
According to CNN on Dec. 30, using her Facebook page to come out to her fans the “Good Morning America” anchor wrote about her sexuality for the first time for a public audience. Robert’s referred to her girlfriend by her first name only writing:
"I am grateful for my entire family, my long time girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together."
People Magazine identified Roberts’ girlfriend as Amber Laign, a women Roberts’ met over a decade ago through mutual friends. Laign is a licensed therapist.
Twitter lit up with an outpouring of support for Roberts and even the First Lady posted her happiness and support for the “GMA” star anchor. Michelle Obama tweeted:
"I am so happy for you and Amber! You continue to make us all proud. –mo."
