Robin Roberts is best known as a "Good Morning America" anchor, cancer survivor and is an inspiring public figure. Now she has quietly come out as having a long-time girlfriend according to CNN on December 30.
Although friends and coworkers already knew the status of Robin Roberts sexuality, the general public did not. Roberts very publicly battled breast cancer, a rare blood disease and a host of other health problems. She did not, however, speak publicly of her love life until recently.
It wasn't until Robin Roberts posted a heart-felt end of the year message on her public Facebook page that the world took note. Buried in the middle of a very moving and personal reflection were these words, "I am grateful for my entire family, my long time girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together." This is the first time that Roberts, who did not give the last name of her girlfriend, has openly talked about being gay.
The media frenzy resulting from just one quiet Facebook post has been both positive and negative. Many celebrities have taken to Twitter to congratulate Roberts for her bravery. Even Michelle Obama tweeted, "I am so happy for you and Amber! You continue to make us all proud. -mo." Ellen Degeneres and Rosie O'Donnell, both outspoken lesbians, also tweeted their support.
