Robin Kelly, candidate for the 2nd Illinois Congressional district, is picking up steam and great momentum with big-time endorsements and a high-profile national campaign targeting the undue influence in politics of the National Rifle Association. As the campaign heads toward election day of Tuesday, Feb. 26., Robin Kelly released her fundraising numbers through Feb. 13. The report shows that Robin Kelly has thus far has raised $417,727.19, from 5,254 individuals, making small "grassroots" donations averaging $79.50.
The activist endorsement of Markos Moulitsas of the Daily Kos makes up 85 percent of her total donors, as 4,456 of these donors emanated from the Daily Kos., as was pointed out in his latest posting appropriately titled, "Robin Kelly crushing it with donors, endorsements, reality."
The Daily Kos community also accounts for $80,937 of that total, or over 19 percent of her entire fundraising haul. Markos Moulitsas is "the leading" progressive voice in America and the Daily Kos is "the leading" progressive platform in America.
Markos Moulitsas says that to help deal a blow to the NRA's continued power in Congress, The Daily Kos is enthusiastically supporting Robin Kelly in the upcoming Illinois 2nd Congressional District primary. Markos has been encouraging donors to help by contributing $3 (or more!) to her campaign.
The fundraising in this campaign, is reminiscent of the Obama style of "grassroots" fundraising. In large part that credit belongs to Markos Moulitsas. "Grassroots" is something that Robin Kelly knows plenty about, having been a significant early supporter of Barack Obama in 2003 in his longshot bid to become a United States Senator. And later in his highly improbable longshot bid to become President of the United States.
Robin Kelly has remained a strong political friend of President Obama and is a close personal friend of President Obama to this day.
“I am humbled by the outpouring of 'grassroots' supporters who have joined my campaign to end gun violence and bring safety, prosperity and opportunity to every citizen of the second Congressional district. I see a renaissance in the wings for Chicago and the Southland. In Congress, I will fight every day to make our communities ones where we can be proud to live, work, and shop, and where no one has to live in fear of gun violence.”
The fundraising success comes on the heels of several high profile endorsements earlier this week, including Congressman Danny Davis, Congressman Bobby Rush, and Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky. Each cited Kelly’s strong and consistent record of supporting gun safety measures to stem the tide of gun violence, as well as her ethical approach and readiness to lead on the first day.
Eight-term Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) said at a recent press conference that "I'm endorsing Robin because Congress needs someone who is going to fight for strong gun violence prevention laws, and Robin Kelly is that candidate. Robin has the experience to hit the ground running and the passion to make a difference."
She said about her outpouring of national support in the form of Super PAC support, in typical Robin Kelly fashion. "I am the strongest candidate in this race. Guns is not an issue for me, it is a philosophy for me."
In addition to the Schakowsky, Rush and Davis endorsements, Robin Kelly also received the coveted endorsement of the Chicago Tribune. She was also recently endorsed by over 100 ministers. who are members of the International Ministers & Community Alliance at the Holy Zion Church in Chicago.
In addition, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's Super PAC, Independence USA, has poured nearly one million dollars into the race. The momentum is moving toward the Robin Kelly campaign and overwhelming her opponents campaigns.
Robin Kelly is the only candidate in the race to issue a five-point pledge to combat gun violence.
• Pass a strong, comprehensive ban on assault weapons.
• Eliminate the gun show loophole.
• Ban the use of high capacity ammunition magazines, like those used in Newtown and Aurora.
• Pledge never to receive support from organizations, like the NRA, that oppose reasonable gun safety legislation.
• Support current laws that prohibit conceal and carry permits.
