Roberta Flack's new album of Beatles songs has some John Lennon links

Roberta Flack's album of Beatles songs, "Let It Be Roberta", due out next month, makes an interesting choice in the tunes it covers.

The album will contain 12 songs. It will feature 11 Lennon & McCartney songs done by the Beatles, and one by George Harrison, though "Isn't It a Pity" from his solo career.

When we previewed "We Can Work It Out" from the album in September, we noted at the time her take on the song was unique. Here's the entire tracklist: "In My Life," "Hey Jude," "We Can Work It Out," "Let It Be," "Oh Darling," "I Should Have Known Better," "The Long & Winding Road," "Come Together," "Isn't It a Pity," "If I Fell," "And I Love Him" and "Here, There and Everywhere."

The album was produced by Sherrod Barnes, Jerry Barnes, Barry Miles, Ricardo Jordan and Flack.

The CD booklet will include a picture of Flack with John Lennon and Yoko Ono at the 1975 Grammys. (See video at left with a classic clip of Lennon and Paul Simon presenting Record of the Year. Flack was one of the artists nominated.) The closing track, "Here, There and Everywhere," was recorded live in 1972 at Carnegie Hall.

The CD also gets an endorsement from Yoko Ono, who says in the liner notes, "With this collection, Roberta is adding a woman's voice of fun and joy and, again, making people realize how universal these songs are. Thank you, Roberta, you are the greatest."

Ironically, the album's release will get some competition from a Beatle. Paul McCartney's "Kisses on the Bottom" is being released the same day.
