In a column posted Friday at Salon.com, former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich accused the Tea Party of engaging in a plot to "undermine the government of the United States, to destroy much of its capacity to do the public’s business, and to sow distrust among the population," Breitbart.com reported Saturday.
According to Reich, sequestration is "only the start."
"What they set out to do was not simply change Washington but eviscerate the U.S. government — 'drown it in the bathtub,' in the words of their guru Grover Norquist – slashing Social Security and Medicare, ending worker protections we’ve had since the 1930s, eroding civil rights and voting rights, terminating programs that have helped the poor for generations, and making it impossible for the government to invest in our future," he added.
Joel B. Pollack reminded readers that sequestration was Obama's idea -- something he said Reich downplayed.
Pollack then asked if, in Reich's view, Obama is "some kind of Manchurian Tea Party candidate designed to demonstrate the failure of liberalism?"
Pollack also observed that it was Obama who tried to stir up fear and anger among the American people with dire predictions of gloom and doom.
"And," Pollack added, "perhaps Reich should be reminded that it was Democrats who consciously chose a strategy of fear in selling Obamacare to the public."
In his article, Reich bemoaned the Republicans' refusal to let Obama burden wealthier earners with more tax increases.
He then suggested Obama "give up all hope of making a deal with the Tea Partiers who now run the Republican Party" and set out on a campaign to demonize the Tea Party.
Pollack quoted left wing Chicago strategist Robert Creamer: “To win we must not just generate understanding, but emotion--fear, revulsion, anger, disgust.”
"As is nearly always the case, the left's accusations of conspiracy and sedition are a form of projection, accusing others of what they themselves are doing," Pollack added.
This kind of rhetoric against the Tea Party is nothing new.
Talk show host Mike Malloy, for example, called on an "angel of the Lord" to murder Tea Party members by cutting off their heads.
A 2010 Socialist conference called for physical violence against members of the Tea Party, and a 2011 editorial cartoon suggested Obama send Navy SEALs to assassinate Tea Party Republicans.
Pollack said that Americans should remember Reich's "blunt conspiratorial fantasy" the next time Tea Party Republicans like Ted Cruz are attacked by cable talk show hosts like Chris Matthews.
