Robert Pattinson defends Kristen Stewart's 'rape' comment

Entertainment Weekly put out a preview today of their interview with cast of The Twilight Saga, including Robert Pattinson, which is appearing in this week's issue.   What Robert had to say is already hitting the internet and making waves.

While talking about recent controversy over a statement Kristen made comparing dealing with the paparazzi to rape, Robert had this to say:

None of those associations came out and gave a statement [criticizing Kristen] without being called upon by the media first — who were doing it specifically to get hits on their websites. That whole system of Internet journalists, where no one is called to account, is almost entirely about hate. All these people get away with doing it because they have no responsibility to anyone. All they need is to get a salacious headline and people click on it, because it’s easy. And it’s quite good being part of these Twilight films because you have to give so many interviews all the time, you can defend yourself. That’s the only way. All of us stick together, as well. There are so many little nerds behind their computers, on their little blogs.

Indeed, some of the media outlets are none too kind to Kristen.  When he broke the initial story of Kristen's comments, Perez Hilton ended with, "If you don't like the biz, then leave. It'd be a win-win - you get your privacy, we don't have to be annoyed with your face and sour puss attitude."

To take a look at the situation from Kristen's point of view, consider what she said in June's issue of Elle Magazine in regards constant comments about looking miserable all the time:

"It's not that I'm miserable, it's just that somebody's yelling at me," she says. "I literally, sometimes, have to keep myself from crying. It's a physical reaction to the energy that's thrown at you."

And now take a look at what the red carpet is like from Kristen's point of view:

Perez Hilton responded to Robert's defense of Kristen with "nice try".  X17Online said, "Seriously, guys.  Stop talking!"  And Gawker Media owned site Jezebel called Robert's quote a rant, but otherwise left the judgment call to the commenters.

Re: Kristen Stewart's rape comment: Leave her alone. She has the right to however she says she feels. Perez Hilton only WANTS to be a woman--he isn't one really so unless you have been raped and you are offended....shut up. If you have been raped, and don;t understand the vulnerability and fear she feels--then consider yourself lucky that you aren't living her life right now because it WOULD be and IS overwhelming. Everyone wants something from her and then when she says how she feels--she is slammed for it. Stop it. She isn;t whining about being a velebrity. She is trying to explain how she feels when people are taking things from her without her consernt: photos, whatever--it IS invasive. It is intrusive and she is being real. WHat we have taight hby this experience is that she cannot say what she really thinks and feels. Her interviews might as well be scripted --as Mick Jagger asked, would that satisfy you? I guess so. Who wants real when we have so much "reality?"
