The Seattle Seahawks traveled to Indianapolis hoping to extend their winning streak by defeating the Colts on Sunday. The Colts not only gave the Seattle a great fight, they also sent the Seahawks home with their first loss as a souvenir. The Colts won the battle 34-28.
Even with several memorable Colts moments, one particular play stands out above the rest. Linebacker Robert Mathis made history today as he achieved his 100th career sack.
Mathis has been in Indianapolis since 2003, makimg this his 11th season with the Colts.Without a doubt, Mathis has been a necessary component to the Colts' defense for years. During this time, he has had a total of 452 combined tackles for the Colts. Mathis has also defended 15 passes while intercepting 1. The veteran linebacker has forced 42 fumbles and recovered 14.
Even when Head Coach Chuck Pagano decided to changed the Colts' defensive scheme to a 3-4 hybrid, Mathis' stats still thrived. Last season, Mathis had 8 sacks, 1 forced fumble and caught his first career interception.
Already this season, Mathis is on course to well surpass his 2012 numbers. In the Colts' first 5 games, Mathis has accumulated 24 combine tackles, 9.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 1 pass defended.
In the Colts' upset over Seattle, Mathis not only hit the 100-sack mark, he surpassed it. Mathis was able to get to sacks on Russel Wilson, one of which forced a fumble and stopped the Seahawks from scoring again before halftime. Mathis now is credited with 101 sacks so far.
