According to the Huffington Post, on Wednesday, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., his son Conor, and dozens of others were arrested just outside the White House. The arrests occurred during a show of civil disobedience as protesters were blocking a thoroughfare in front of the White House during a Keystone XL pipeline protest.
Other high-profile persons in the group included famed actress Daryl Hannah, Bill McKibben who is the founder of the 350.org website, and Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune.
The group of activists with celebrities on-hand intended to put pressure on President Barack Obama to reject the proposed Keystone XL crude oil pipeline.
McKibben stated:
We really shouldn’t have to be put in handcuffs to stop KXL <because> our nation’s leading climate scientists have told us it’s dangerous folly, and all the recent Nobel Peace laureates have urged us to set a different kind of example for the world, so the choice should be obvious.
In an email, Robert F. Kennedy stated:
It’s unfortunate that civil disobedience is the only recourse against a catastrophic and criminal enterprise that will enrich a few while impoverishing the rest of humanity and threatening the future of civilization.
Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is the son of a 1968 presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy as well as the nephew of former President John F. Kennedy. Conor Kennedy recently made headlines due to a romance with famed singer-songwriter Taylor Swift.
