Pasadena City College is an integral part to Rose Parade history, and so it is fitting that the 2021 Tournament of Roses President will be an administrator from that college. On Thursday night, Robert B. Miller, Assistant Superintendent/Senior Vice President, Business and College Services for the Pasadena Area Community College District and Pasadena City College, was announced as the newest member of the Tournament of Roses Executive Committee and in line for the 2021 presidency.
The announcement of Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association leadership and organizational structure was made by the new president, R. Scott Jenkins. In addition to Miller and Jenkins, the 14-member Executive Committee consists of Rich Chinen, executive vice president; Ira C. (Mike) Matthiessen, treasurer, Brad Ratliff, secretary; Sally M. Bixby, past president; vice presidents Lance M. Tibbet, Gerald K. Freeny and Laura Farber; and at-large members are Esther Campos-Ball, Darryl S. Hallie, Lily H. Harada, Barbara F. Kuntz and Laurie A. Stiver. Jenkins also announced the election of three new members to the Association’s board of directors: Mark Leavens, Terrance Madigan and Jason C. Melillo.
Robert Miller has served as a Tournament volunteer since 1984 and most recently chaired the Post Parade Committee. Other committees he has chaired are the Coronation/VIP Tailgate, Float Construction, Float Entries, Sports Media and University Entertainment committees.
Miller was appointed to his current job at Pasadena City College in Nov., 2012, but his roots at PCC go back to his own college days, when he earned an associate degree in telecommunications from the two-year college. In 1975, he produced an Emmy-nominated telecourse for the school, and in 1977 he returned to become Production Manager of Instructional Television Services for two years, Manager of Media Services for three years, and Assistant Dean, Learning Resources for four years.
He and his wife Barbara have lived in the Pasadena area since 1969 and have two children, one married and the other engaged to be married this year.
He received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of La Verne and a master’s degree in Public Administration from California State University, Northridge. He is now completing his dissertation for a doctorate in public administration at La Verne.
From 1990 to 2005, Robert Miller held director and vice president level positions in development and marketing with INTELECOM, a leader in the production of educational television and distance learning courses owned by 38 California Community Colleges. He came home to PCC in 2005 to serve as Associate Dean of Academic Support, and held several other positions before assuming his current role, which includes overseeing the college’s fiscal services, business services, human resources, information technology, facilities and construction management, police and safety services, institutional research, and Teaching and Learning Center.
The theme of the 125th Rose Parade and 100th Rose Bowl Game is “” The Tournament of Roses is a celebration that lasts several weeks in the fall and winter, with the high points being the Rose Parade presented by Honda and the Rose Bowl Game presented by VIZIO on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014.
