The Jefferson County deputies responded to a call reporting a robbery at 1:30 a.m. this morning, Sept. 9, 2013 on the 1300 block of Eastern Valley Road. It was revealed during their investigation that the robbery had actually taken place 2 hours before the report was made. The business owner admitted to the deputies that he had been running an illegal gambling operation. The owner said he had hesitated to report the robbery and had considered not to do so because of the nature of his business. Deputies found the operation contained electronic gaming machines.
The owner of the business told deputies that around 10:00 p.m. he allowed three male suspects into the business to play the machines. There were already patrons inside playing.
One of the men emerged from the back room and complained that it was too hot. When the owner rose to address the complaint he pulled a gun and demanded money. The two other men joined him in searching for money. They found a shotgun which they held on patrons and the owner while they took the money. The suspects fled with an undetermined amount of cash.
At about 11:30 a.m. today, investigators from the Sheriff's Office returned to the business to follow up on the investigation. The illegal gambling machines were seized and removed from the business. An investigation into the illegal gaming is underway. No charges have been filed as yet.
