Robbery goes horribly bad as baby shot and killed while sleeping in stroller (Photos)

A tragic story is coming out of Brunswick, Ga. where a mom claims to have been walking her baby in his stroller yesterday morning when she came upon two youths demanding money. When the mother replied that she didn’t have any money, the two youths shot her in the leg and shot and killed her baby boy while he lay sleeping in his stroller, ABC News reported earlier today.

Police discovered the mother, Sherry West, and her 13-month-old baby after responding to yesterday’s 911 call. The baby was dead at the scene with a gunshot wound to his head by the time police arrived.

The mother described the two alleged assailants as African-American males “one between 13 and 15 years old, and the other possibly as young as 10.”

Police are searching the southeastern Ga. neighborhood for the two youths who the mother said fled on foot.

According to the mother,

"He said, 'I am going to kill you if you don't give me your money." She said she insisted she had no cash so the older boy shot her in the leg.

"He says, 'Well, I am going to kill your baby.'"

Sherry West said she tried to shield her baby with her arms as he lay sleeping, but was pushed aside by one of the assailants who then shot the sleeping infant in the head.

Other than the claimed robbery, police have a vexing case with no other apparent motive, no weapons recovered at the scene, no suspects, and no witnesses to the shootings.

The mayor of the city of Brunswick, Bryan Thompson, said at an earlier news conference:

"This is obviously just a terrible day in the city of Brunswick and made even more terrible by the senseless killing of a young child and it appears perpetrated by children themselves."

And at a news conference held earlier today, authorities cited their understanding that the “rumor mills” were working overtime in the case of the baby’s shooting, and also said that the police would leave no stone unturned in their search for their truth.

When Brunswick Police Department spokesman Todd Rhodes was asked if it was possible that the mother’s story was a fabrication, he replied:

"There is nothing out of the question. We are not overlooking anything."

A $10,000 reward for information leading to the baby’s killer is being offered by police in Brunswick, Ga.
